Just received a TS-790A yesterday. Wanted to replace my TS-700A and IC-471A with a single rig. No UT-10 installed yet. Installed the 790 in place of these two rigs. Have several problems. This first problem is severe SSB distortion on both 144 and 342. Checked on the air with another ham, 432 so distorted, barely copyable, 144 is better but still not good enough for actual on the air use. Tried several mics, MC-80, MC-60. MC-60 better than MC-80 but still not recommended for on-the-air use. MC-60 known good mic, used daily with TS-940S.

Anyone have problems with SSB distortion on both 144 and 432? Report is 432 far worse than 144.

I use mine with a mc60 and no problems, trie and monitor yourself while transmitting on e dubbyload to see if you still have distortion

Yes, I first heard the distortion while using a dummy load and monitoring myself on the IC-471A. I then hooked up the antenna and contacted our club station about 20 miles away who are setting the station up for the June 8th-10th VHF/UHF contest, and they told me the same thing about the distortion. Changed back to the IC-471A and everything was crystal clear at the club station.

Have you tried with speech compressor in and out? There is one report of
the compressor causing distortion on SSB in the message archives.

Yes, thanks Nick, tried both ways and they couldn't hear any difference at the club station.
